Chapter 31

Vincent

“I’m not sure who had a more exciting evening,” I say, surveying the paint-splattered porch. Avery is on his hands and knees, a bucket of soap in front of him and a soaked sponge in his hand.

He looks up from the spot he’s cleaning, smiling brightly. His face is clear of the usual lines of worry he wears on nights like tonight.

“Might be me. I had a charming evening with Madison that ended in her getting wet.” He gives me a cocky grin, and I can’t help but return it. He’s confident and relaxed tonight. Not what I was expecting, and that makes it even better.

“Do tell.”

“A gentleman never tells. Except to say it was a good night.” He goes back to working on cleaning up. “She ran at the end like she’s been doing. I can’t help but think all these small moments will add up and tilt the scale in our favor though.”

I hum in agreement. “I think you might be right.”

He worries at an already clean spot before crawling over to get at a new patch of paint.

“Leave it, sweetheart, and come to bed with me. We can tackle it in the morning.”

He blinks rapidly, looking around the patio, and I see panic creeping in. It’s a mess, but it can be fixed. Tomorrow.

“Do I need to tell you again?” I ask, deepening my tone to the dominant voice of my alpha.

Avery quickly squeezes his fists open and closed before taking a deep breath. “Yes, Alpha. But I need to dump the water first, and I want to save our paintings.”

“All right, sweetheart. You have five minutes. Meet me in the shower.”

He kisses my cheek on his way out, soapy bucket in hand. “Thank you, Vincent.”

I take the stairs to our room and groan when I open the door as I’m hit in the face with a blast of Madison’s perfume. The condo is large, and Madison’s scent is locked down, so she hasn’t permeated the house. One step into my room though, and my cock stirs. Our entire set of rooms smells like dripping cherries, drizzled chocolate, and warm vanilla. It’s like someone took the essence of her scent and made it into a fucking air-freshener. For the last few days the scent has been increasing, permeating everything.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out where it’s coming from. Did she come in here and lie in the bed? I wouldn’t be surprised, the sneaky mouse.

Frustrated, I survey the space, looking for anything out of place. I check under the mattress, rifle through the closet, and peek inside potted plants. Nothing. Everything is in order. Pulling books off the bookcase, I groan.

“You noticed it too, huh?”

I turn to find Avery watching me with an amused smile, leaning against our bathroom door.

“What is it?” I ask.

Eyes full of amusement, he says, “Probably one of her tricks.”

“And we get a scent bomb?”

“Yes, exactly.” Avery laughs. “Like Luca’s phone. And Alex’s office.”

“What happened to Alex’s office?” My cousin hasn’t said shit.
